Academic Policies

Every student must follow the policies of the department, college, and university. Below are policies that you must adhere to. If you have questions about a policy, please contact your advisor.

Department Policies

GRADE REQUIREMENT FOR AREC COURSES:
All courses must be passed with a grade of C- or better to count towards prerequisite courses, major core courses, or field requirements.  “C- or better” means any grade for which the University awards 1.7 or more quality points in calculating GPA.

COURSE LIMIT:
It is department policy that a student can take no more than four upper-level AREC courses in one semester.

BENCHMARK/ PREREQUISITE REQUIREMENT:
It is department policy that current students in the major must complete all benchmark courses and prerequisite courses before taking any upper level AREC courses. Effective Fall 2016, all students entering the major will be required to complete AREC326, Intermediate Applied Microeconomics, which is a benchmark. ECON306 will no longer be accepted in the AREC major and is no longer a benchmark requirement.

2.0 cumulative GPA in the Major:
Beginning with students matriculating in Fall 2012, to be awarded a baccalaureate degree, students must have a minimum C (2.00) cumulative grade point average across all courses used to satisfy major degree requirements, minor requirements, and undergraduate
certificate requirements.

University Policies

CORE PROGRAM AND NEW GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM:
Students enrolled at the university prior to fall 2012 will be under the CORE program. Students matriculating* to the University of Maryland (including freshmen and students transferring from private institutions and from non-Maryland public institutions) beginning
in Fall 2012 will be under the new General Education program. For more information, please visit the General Education program website.
*For purposes of this transfer policy, matriculation means to be admitted to college and enrolled in classes following award of the high school diploma.

REPEAT POLICY:
There is a limit to the number of times a student may repeat a course. Students may have ONE repeat of any course in which they earned an A, A+, A-, B, B+,B-, C, C+, C-, D,D+, D-, F, P, S, W, I, NGR, or Audit; they cannot be registered ( after the Schedule Adjustment Period) for any given course more than twice. All attempts WILL be counted toward the total limit for
repeatable credits. Students may repeat no more than 18 credits. (Additionally, if a student withdraws from all courses during a semester, those courses are not included in this limit.) For more information, please visit Undergraduate Catalog.

PLUS/MINUS GRADING:
Beginning with implementation in Fall 2012, plus/minus grading will be the University's new official grading policy. Under the policy, quality points for each letter grade from A through D will reflect plus and minus components of the grade. For more information, please
