The UMD Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics is happy to announce that Juan C. Angulo, a Ph.D. candidate, had been awarded the Richard F. Davis Scholarship by the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. This award is given to an outstanding and deserving scholar with a broad interest in agriculture.

Juan’s research focuses on applied economics, agricultural economy, and political economy of development with a focus on developing countries. His dissertation evaluates the consequences of agricultural booms of both illegal and legal crops on the local economies in Mexico and in Colombia. He studies how the presence of these booms can deter children from attending school or farmers from joining drug cartels.

“I am very happy to receive this award. I am grateful to my advisors Professors Erich Battistin and Cory Smith who not only have mentored and supported me, but also nominated me for this award,” said Angulo.
