Since 1999, the department has offered an Agricultural Outlook and Policy Conference. This conference is a way to gather experts to discuss topics important to Maryland agriculture. This conference is a highlight of the year.
The 2019 conference was held January 18, 2019, at the Doubletree Hotel in Annapolis, MD. The speakers represented the University of Maryland, the Maryland Farm Bureau, and Nagel Farm Services. Topics included commodity price prospects and grain marketing strategies, the interactions of the cover crop program and the nutrient trading program, a review of the recent Farm Bill, and a state of Maryland legislative update.
There was not a conference in 2018, to allow for a shift in the usually scheduled time of the conference.
The conference was held on December 12, 2017 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Annapolis, MD. In addition to the customary sessions regarding commodity price prospects and the state of Maryland legislative updates, there were two sessions regarding water quality: Using Nontraditional Waters on the Farm and Agricultural Conservation Practices and Water Quality. Other sessions covered topics such as the dairy industry, the 2017 Census of Agriculture, and the 2018 Farm Bill. The event concluded with a review of the survey conducted by the Agricultural Law Education Initiative regarding the legal advice needs of Maryland's agricultural community.
