From: Cheng-i Wei, Dean, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources

It is with a sad heart that I announce to you that Dr. Bruce Gardner passed away during the night last night.  Bruce was admitted to the University of Maryland Cancer Center in Baltimore on February 11 following a diagnosis of multiple myeloma.

Bruce came to the college in 1981 as professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (AREC) and has served in many capacities since that time, with only one break in service to take a leave of absence from September 1989 to January 1992 to serve as Assistant Secretary for Economics in the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  He served as chair of AREC from 2000-2003; interim dean from 2003-2005; and had just agreed to serve a second term as chair effective this past July.  Throughout the years, he received many awards and much recognition, including being named by the University as Distinguished University Professor.

In addition to his academic service to the campus and the college, Bruce worked with the World Bank and other international organizations on agricultural policies and reform in many developing countries around the world.  In January of this year, I had the wonderful opportunity to travel with him and his wife on a trip to China to visit several universities.

Bruce was a wonderful teacher, colleague, and friend and we will all miss him greatly.

The family of Dr. Bruce Gardner has confirmed that the service to commemorate and celebrate his life will be Friday, March 28, at 4:30 p.m. in Memorial Chapel here on the UM, College Park campus. A reception at the Rossborough Inn will immediately follow the service.

Those who would like to make a charitable donation in his honor may send donations to Washington Bach Consorts, 1220 19th Street, Northwest #300, Washington DC 20036. Please write in the memo line on the check "in memory of Dr. Bruce Gardner." Donations may also be made online at http://www.bachconsort.org.
