AREC 405 - Economics of Agricultural Production (3)

Prerequisites: ECON 306 and MATH 220. The use and application of production economics in agricultural and resource industries through graphical and mathematical approaches. Production functions, cost functions, multiple product and joint production, and production processes through time are studied.

Purpose of Course:  To provide the student with an understanding of the basic concepts and applications of the economics principles of agricultural production.

Text:  There is no assigned text in this class.  All material relevant to the class will be covered in lectures. 

Term Project:  Each student in the class will be expected to prepare a short paper on some topic within the purview of agricultural production.  Students are encouraged to seek out topics which are of particular interest to them.  The paper is to be between 10-15 pages typed and is due at the beginning of the final examination.  No late papers will be accepted.  All projects must be approved by R. Chambers.  The paper will be judged upon clarity of exposition, the student's ability to employ concepts developed in class and his or her own outside readings in the discussion of the problem he or she has chosen, and basic elements of style.

This paper is subject to University guidelines concerning plagiarism and citation of other authors' work.

Homework:  Periodically mandatory homeworks will be assigned.

Grading System:

Mid-Semester Examination (October 23)30%
Final Examination, as scheduled40%
Paper30%

There will be no class meeting on September 23 and September 25, 2003.
