| The Chesapeake Bay is one of the greatest natural assets of our region. Since the mid-1980's, attention has been focused on improving water quality in the Bay and it's Tributaries. Extension and research faculty in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Maryland continue to analyze policies and regulations whose goals are to improve water quality. Additional analyses of Federal, State, or University led programs that are designed to improve water quality are also available.
The programs and policies considered focus primarily on nonpoint sources of water pollutants. The economics of agricultural adoption and use of Best Management Practices, Nutrient Management Plans, and Alternative Animal Waste Management practices are assessed. Information from these agricultural management assessments are used to analyze the economic impacts of policies and regulations designed to reduce nutrient and pesticide pollution from agricultural sources.
