Advising
The AREC major requires mandatory advising for every student prior to registering for each semester. You can schedule an appointment online.
Make an appointment onlineIf your current major is AREC, you are required every semester to do the following:
- You must meet with the Assistant Director every semester prior to registering.
- Fill in the advising checklist and bring it to your appointment.
If you are interested in speaking with someone about the AREC major or wish to change into the AREC major, you are required to do the following:
- Schedule an appointment.
- Fill in the advising checklist and bring it to your appointment. Note: Only if you want to change into the AREC major.
- You must submit a four year plan and obtain approval. Once your four year plan is approved, your major will be changed.
For all students who became AREC majors after March 2008, all courses must be passed with a grade of C or better to count towards prerequisite courses, major core courses, or field requirements. “C or better” means any grade for which the University awards 2 or more quality points in calculating GPA. This does not apply to students who were already AREC majors prior to March 2008.

The undergraduate list-serve is a tool designed to communicate announcements and important deadlines to all AREC majors. If you are not receiving messages from the list-serve, please email Adaire Parker at aparker@arec.umd.edu and request to be added.
